h2>CCD Barcode Scanners
CCD barcode scanners are small, fast and light weight scanners that use Light emitting diodes (LED) for illumination. They do not require safety precautions because the LED illumination is not harmful to the eyes. They have no oscillating mirrors and other moving parts like laser scanners. This makes them more durable and less prone to mechanical failure.
Interfaces Supported by CCD scanners
Most CCD scanners have keyboard wedge interfaces. Once the scanner is connected to the computer it is treated as a second keyboard by the computer. On scanning barcodes the scanner sends barcode data into the system as if the data was typed on the keyboard. Some CCD scanners come equipped with a RS 232 serial data interface. They send scanned data to the computer at RS 232 levels in ASCII formats.
CCD barcode scanners used in cash registers and point of sale applications use the OCIA interface. Its parameter is similar to the keyboard wedge interface and varies with the type of terminal used. Some CCD scanners use the Wand emulation interface. The interface can work with the barcode decoder that allows the scanner to decode the barcode. However the scanner’s output is in the TTL level waveform which is the form of output of undecoded scanners. Hence CCD scanners with this interface can operate with older systems that earlier worked with undecoded scanners.
CCD scanners with a laser-gun compatible interface are used to replace laser-gun scanners as both devices use the same power supply voltage and nine pin connector. A CCD scanner may support up to three interfaces.
Types of CCD scanners
There are long range CCD scanners that have a read distance of up to 20 inches. They have wide reading windows and the capacity to scan all common types of barcodes. They allow barcode menu scanning. They are durable and withstand drops.
2D CCD scanners are able to scan 2 dimensional apart from the usual linear barcodes. They are enabled with wide reading windows, barcode menu scanning feature and bright aim lines.
Wireless CCD barcode scanners employ the latest Blue Tooth technology to enable scanning up to a range of 100 meters. They keep the work area safe by the absence of cables. They can read black and colored codes and find good use in Point of Sale applications.
CCD barcode scanners are cheaper than laser scanners and their performance is as efficient as laser scanners. Hence they have replaced their laser counterparts in Point of Sale and many other applications.
