Barcode Scanner

There are various types of Barcode scanners available now.

The scanners today are CCD type which means they are Charged Coupled. A good Barcode Scanner is available for $100 and this is much better than a laser scanner which costs more. This CCD scanner is much like a wand, expanded. The wands have one receiver and one diode emitting light. When the scanner is triggered, the code is lit up and this starts receiving the elements. A CCD scanner helps to scan faster and is more reliable than a wand.

The Laser scanners are so called because of the laser diode or it is sometimes called the scan engine. There are mirrors and lenses projected into the barcode which brings forth a line pattern and single red line. The laser scanners operate in two ways. These will trigger automatically if the barcode is held in front of the scanner. This helps to keep the hands of the personnel’s hands free and this is the real utility of the laser scanners.

The barcodes that are of two dimensions have become popular in the recent years. With these barcodes up to 3000 bytes of information can be encoded and it is the size of a stamp. These barcodes, however, cannot be read by ordinary scanners. Barcode imagers are required for scanning them. These work like the digital camera. An image of the barcode is taken and then decoded. The encoded data is then transmitted to the host computer. The barcode scanner is connected to the computer.
